The Rev. Eileen O’Brien, Missioner for Houston Canterbury
The Rev. Eileen O’Brien serves as the Episcopal campus missioner for Houston Canterbury, based at the University of Houston.  She received her M.Div. cum laude from Virginia Theological Seminary in 2014, with an Honors Thesis in New Testament Studies. In 2003, she received a B.A. in Spanish from Rice University in Houston, TX.  Eileen is bilingual in English and SpanIMG_5512ish, and an avid student of Koine Greek, biblical Hebrew, and Latin.  Check out her blog.

Prior to attending seminary, Eileen served as Director of Children’s and Youth Ministries at St. Alban’s in Waco, Program Manager for an AmeriCorps after-school program for at-risk children in southeast Houston, and Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministries at Christ Church Cathedral, Houston.  Most recently she served as the Curate at Christ Church Cathedral, working primarily with the Spanish-speaking community and the Justice and Peace Council.

Eileen serves the Episcopal Diocese of Texas as a member of the Commission on Hispanic Ministry, the Board of Examining Chaplains, the Nominations Committee, and as the Costa Rica Companion Diocese Liaison for the World Mission Board.

Maria Bautista Vargas, Missioner Associate
IMG_7573Maria Bautista Vargas is the Missioner Associate for Houston Canterbury, where her focus is developing an Episcopal presence at Texas Southern University and San Jacinto Central. Maria graduated from the University of Houston-Downtown with a B.S. in Psychology in 2018.

Prior to working with Houston Canterbury, Maria was working as a Community Organizer with The Metropolitan Organization (TMO), as well as the Youth Group Coordinator for Epiphany Episcopal Church. Maria was also a teacher assistant at Bethany Methodist Weekday School and a Camp Counselor for City Camp in Philadelphia.

Maria grew up within the Episcopal Diocese of Washington D.C. and moved to Houston in 2014, along with her parents, The Rev. Simon and Amarilis Bautista and her siblings Tito, Leaquina and Lily. With two parents from the Dominican Republic, Maria is bilingual in both Spanish and English. She enjoys musical theater, traveling and hanging out with her dog Milo.
