85ade9ff782a4bf8a27d3c7377d04efa.200x300x1There is this poignant opening scene in the musical Avenue Q, where the main character, who has just graduated, sings with a mix of frustration and naivete “What do you do with a B.A. in English?”  Perhaps as graduation approaches you are wondering something similar.  I know that I did at that time in my own life.

If you are looking for an opportunity to put your time and gifts to work for the community as you do some further work discerning your vocation and career path, consider a year with the Episcopal Service Corps (ESC).  ESC has locations all around the country, but this coming year will be a growth year for the Houston program as ESCers get out into their communities to do the long-term work of Hurricane Harvey recovery and redevelopment and help to start new missional communities.

Below is a list of this coming year’s service sites in Houston and Galveston:


Casa de Esperanza // Hands of Hope Intern // Casa de Esperanza de los Niños strives to break the destructive cycle of child abuse by offering safe homes to children of families in crisis. The Hands of Hope Interns work with caseworkers, psychological staff and community volunteers on a routine basis to ensure that the children in placement receive the highest quality of care. Learn more.

YMCA International // YMCA International Services is a unique center of the YMCA of Greater Houston that delivers client-centered programs to refugees, immigrants and other vulnerable populations to advance their economic independence, social integration and civic participation. Learn more.

Preferred Communities Intern // Primarily responsible for ensuring that administration tasks such as maintaining case file integrity and providing assistance to the medical case manager in the form making medical appointments, arranging transportation, and filling out benefits’ applications.

Trafficked Persons Program Intern //  To help survivors heal from their horrific experiences and to get justice for the crimes committed against them, we work within a multi-disciplinary task force format consisting of federal, state, and local law enforcement, as well as non-profit, faith-based, and social service organizations to ensure survivors receive a wide array of restorative services.

St. Isidore Community // Missional Community Developer // The developer will work with St. Isidore to establish a missional community within a particular context. The developer provides coordination for weekly gatherings, conducts new participant follow up meetings, and conducts neighborhood awareness, service and engagement activities. Learn more

Christ Church Cathedral // Missional Communities Developer // The developer will work with the latino community at Christ Church Cathedral to establish a missional community within a particular context. The developer provides coordination for weekly gatherings, conducts new participant follow up meetings, and conducts neighborhood awareness, service and engagement activities.

reVision Houston // Programming Intern // reVision Houston  leverages the power of community by connecting kids on the edge with mentors, positive peers and life-changing resources. Learn more.

Galveston County

Family Service Center // Outreach and Marketing Intern // Family Service Center of Galveston County provides individual, family, and group counseling to promote the mental health well-being of Galveston residents through intervention counseling, educational parenting workshops, and prevention through youth life skills groups. This position will assist with Parent Education workshops; and provide groups to students to enhance their Social Emotional health. Learn more.

Galveston County Long Term Recovery Group // GCLTRG provides disaster recovery services to our Galveston County residents affected by Hurricane Harvey. This coalition of faith-based organizations, non-profits, federal, county and local government representatives coordinate and implement an effective recovery strategy for the most vulnerable neighbors.

Volunteer Coordination Intern // Register, screen and deploy volunteers to home rebuilding and home staging activities. Provide a positive experience for volunteers throughout the process.

Communications and Public Relations Intern // Assist with developing content for print and social media channels. Learn more.

ADA Women’s Center // Case Management and Resource Development Intern // This is a residential substance abuse treatment program serving adult women in coastal Texas. Working with graduate clients, applicants for this position should have interest and/or educational background in social work, psychology, child development, occupational therapy or other human service related field. Learn more.

Holy Trinity Episcopal & Faith Lutheran Cooperative Ministry // Programming Intern // These two Dickinson congregations seek to strengthen families in the Dickinson/Mainland area, especially those impacted by Hurricane Harvey. This position will involve promoting and marketing the Ark Book Pantry, establishing diaper bank, coordinating volunteers, developing policies and procedure, and fundraising.

Fuller Center Disaster Rebuilders // Missional Coordinator // This position will work with volunteer teams to listen, encourage, respond to needs so that they can accomplish their service; provide on-site hospitality to team on arrival; facilitate evening devotions with volunteer teams as needed; be an advocate for the homeowners to be involved with volunteers at the worksite and with the local partner churches; work with staff to communicate needs of volunteers. Learn more.
